IHS Rwanda and UNICEF Partner to “Go Green” and Enhance Digital Literacy in Schools

October 10, 2023, Kigali: IHS Rwanda, part of the IHS Holding Limited (NYSE: IHS) (“IHS Towers”) group, one of the largest independent owners, operators, and developers of shared communications infrastructure in the world by tower count, has today reaffirmed its dedication to education, environmental preservation, and sustainable development.

In partnership with UNICEF Rwanda, IHS Rwanda will support the planting of 10,000 trees across 10 schools which educate a combined population of approximately 10,000 students. The project aims to help mitigate climate change and protect local ecosystems, while raising environmental awareness among students and local communities.

In addition, in partnership with the Government of Rwanda, IHS Rwanda will donate over 100 laptops to three schools as part of the Giga initiative. Giga is a partnership between UNICEF’s Office of Innovation and International Telecommunications Union’s (ITU) Telecommunications Development Bureau which aims to connect every school in the world to the internet by 2030. This donation seeks to help increase access to digital learning tools for teachers and approximately 3,000 students.

Kunle Iluyemi, Head, Sub Sahara Africa Region, IHS Towers, commented “We are thrilled to join hands with UNICEF in this important endeavor to promote sustainability and digital literacy in Rwandan schools. Our commitment to education and environmental preservation aligns with this project's goals, and we look forward to helping raise awareness of environmental issues and delivering meaningful impact on the communities we serve.”

Julianna Lindsey, UNICEF Rwanda, Country Representative, commented “Climate change has direct and indirect impacts on children's rights to health, life, dignity, and education. It also increases the risk of children’s exposure to violence. It is therefore pertinent that we provide our children – and the teachers that are helping to mold their future – with access to digital literacy to equip them with the necessary skills they will need to compete in this digital age.”
