December, 20, 2023, Lusaka: IHS Zambia, part of the IHS Holding Limited (NYSE: IHS) (“IHS Towers”) group, one of the largest independent owners, operators, and developers of shared communications infrastructure in the world by tower count, attended the completion ceremony for the refurbished Kanyanja Community School to the Ministry of Education and the community of Kakote Village in Kafue District.
Works funded by IHS Zambia included the construction of a 30m x 40m classroom block, creating a gardening/production unit space and refurbishing existing structures. IHS Zambia also purchased 60 double seater desks for pupils, chairs and desks for the teachers, and a variety of cleaning materials. A room was also constructed to be used as an examination center and to securely store pupils’ exam papers.
Kanyanja Community School was first nominated by the Zambia Open Community Schools as a potential recipient of IHS Zambia’s borehole drilling initiative in 2022. On visiting the school to conduct a needs assessment, IHS Zambia found buildings in need of urgent repairs. These repairs were completed under IHS Zambia’s 2023 School Rehabilitation Project.
Kunle Iluyemi, Head, Sub Sahara Africa Region, IHS Towers, said “We are committed to supporting Zambia’s education sector and through our sustainability initiatives seek to give back to the communities we serve. By improving school facilities, we hope to help enhance the quality of education for young learners in Zambia. As a result of these refurbishment works, enrolment at the Kanyanja Community School has increased from 440 to 460 learners from grades one to nine.”
Terry Changwe, Assistant Director of Secondary Education, Ministry of Education, commended IHS Zambia for the successful completion of the project and said, ‘The Ministry of Education will continue to lobby for more support from cooperating partners to construct a secondary school in the Kanyanja area.”
